What are Kidney Stones?
Condition of kidney stones is also termed as Nephrolithiasis. A kidney stone is a strong, crystalline material produced inside the kidney. Urine can form stones when it has high levels of salts and minerals. Kidney stones can start small but can grow in size, and even fill the inner hollow sides of the kidneys. The kidney stone may sometimes pass through the ureter, the channel between the kidney and urinary bladder. When the stone in the ureter has obstructed the urine from the kidney blocks and causes intense pain.
One in 20 people at some point in their life encounters kidney stones.
What are the causes of Kidney Stone?
Dehydration: A major risk factor for the development of kidney stones is dehydration (loss of body fluids). Dehydration may cause due to hard activity, less intake of fluids, work or live in a dry-hot place.
Diet: High levels of calcium in the urine are one of the most common reasons of kidney stones. The way your body handles calcium can cause high urinary calcium levels. A high-protein diet such as beef, fish, chicken and pork will increase the level of acids in the body and urine. The degradation of meat into uric acid is also likely to create stones of both calcium and uric acid.
Medical conditions: Irregular growth of one or more parathyroid glands that regulate the metabolism of calcium and therefore cause higher levels of calcium in the blood and urine to cause kidney stones. The risk of calcium phosphate in the kidney stones may be increased due to a condition called distal renal tubular acidosis in which the acid builds up in the body.
Poor Bowel Conditions: Some bowel conditions due to diarrhea, ulcerative colitis or Crohn & disease, gastric bypass surgery can increase the risk of developing calcium oxalate kidney stones.
Obesity: The other risk factor for stones is obesity. Obesity can affect acid levels in the urinary system, leading to the formation of stones.
Inheritance: Some unusual, hereditary conditions can also increase the probability of certain stone types. For instance, the liver produces too much oxalate in conditions, cystinuria and primary hyperoxaluria.
Due to medication: Many medications and supplements of calcium and vitamin C can increase your risk of stones formation.
Symptoms of Kidney Stone
Most common kidney stone symptoms are:
- Sharp, severe pain in the lower back and side that often reaches the lower abdomen or groin.
- There’s an intense feeling to urinate.
- Burning sensation during the passage of urine.
- Dark or red urine caused by blood (hematuria).
- Nausea & vomiting.
- Pain at the penile tip in males.
Diagnosis of Kidney Stone
The presence of kidney stones is best detected by ultrasound, IVP, or CT scans.
What are the preventions?
Adults producing stones should drink enough water or fluids to excrete at least 2.5 liters of urine per day. The increased consumption of fluid will dilute your urine salts and also prevent kidney stone formation. By doing so, most kidney stones will pass through the urine on their own with time.
What care is right for you? Allopathy or Homeopathy for kidney stones?
In Allopathy
The intake of adequate fluids makes the passage of kidney stones easier, but even if you drink enough fluid, most people require some form of medication to facilitate the passage of urine and relieve pain. However, these allopathic medicines do not work on the root cause of the stone formation and end up causing some side effects as well.
Stones that do not pass through the urine with medicines, surgery or lithotripsy are used to remove them.
